ESG & Sustainability
Operating Responsibly. Embodying Sustainability.
Mining must be done responsibly. From initial site exploration to the site’s transformation, we are re-activating the mine for productivity, while ensuring as part of this process we embed Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles in the site’s renewal and our daily and future operations.
This is how Legacy Mines operates. We protect the environment by minimising new disturbance and utilising existing brownfield sites whenever possible. We employ industry best practices for emissions reduction, waste management, and land rehabilitation –such as adopting renewable energy sources and recycle water while restoring ecosystems along the way. We partner with regional communities through authentic connections and employ locals as well as developing and investing in projects that make a difference to the surrounding community. Legacy Mines is transparent in our operations, upholding strict governance and ethics to ensure we meet or exceed regulatory requirements. Our mission is about much more than leaving our mark. We must strive for better and remain progressive for now and the future.
Environmental Initiatives
Mining for Future Generations
For now and future generations we strive to minimise our environmental footprint at every stage. With Legacy Mines’ focus on restoring inactive mine sites, we are able to avoid disturbing pristine areas and salvage and revitalise land that was previously impacted. Our key environmental initiatives include:
- Climate and Emissions: Incorporating renewable energy and low-emission equipment into our projects. (Our goal is to reach ~90% renewable power and high rates of fuel efficiency on sites.) We measure and actively work to lower our greenhouse gas emissions in line with global best practices.
- Water Management: Maximising water recycling and responsible use. We build water treatment and recycling loops into plant design, aiming to significantly reduce freshwater draw. Tailings dams and water storage are carefully monitored with sensor tech to prevent leaks or contamination.
- Land & Biodiversity: Conducting thorough environmental assessments and then designing mines around key habitats. We set aside conservation zones as needed, relocate and protect wildlife where possible, and use progressive rehabilitation (reclaiming lands concurrently during operations rather than waiting until the end). Topsoil is stockpiled and replanted, and native vegetation is reintroduced to restore ecosystems over time.
- Waste & Tailings: Using modern waste management techniques, such as dry stack tailings or improved liners, to minimise risk of any leakage. We also look for opportunities to re-process old waste dumps or tailings for remaining minerals, which both reduces waste and yields extra resources – a true win-win.

Partnerships With Communities For The Long-Term
Developing and maintaining genuine relationships with the communities we operate in is imperative for the long-term for everyone. Environmental awareness, cultural heritage and safe practices are all front-of-mind priorities for building lasting relationships with real and rewarding outcomes.
Our community-minded approach includes:
- Community Engagement: From the earliest exploration stage, we engage with local communities, Traditional Owners, and stakeholders to listen to their concerns and aspirations. We hold regular community forums, publish updates in plain language, and incorporate feedback into our plans. Transparency and honesty build trust – whether the news is good or bad, we communicate openly about what we’re doing and why.
- Cultural Heritage Respect: We work closely with Indigenous communities to protect and honour cultural heritage sites. Surveys and heritage assessments are conducted before any ground disturbance. If sites of significance are identified, we adjust our plans to avoid them and may partner on initiatives to celebrate and communicate the cultural history of the area.
- Health & Safety in Community: Just as we strive for zero harm on-site, we extend that care to nearby communities. We implement rigorous controls to ensure our operations do not negatively impact public health – for example, dust suppression to maintain air quality, noise reduction measures, and safe transportation protocols on local roads. We also support community health, education, and wellbeing projects as part of being a good neighbour.
